♥♥ The Month of LUV ♥♥
February has long been a month of romance! Valentine’s Day is a day that celebrates Luv ♥♥ There have been many great romantics through time ….Sappho, Shah Jahan, Mary Shelly, King Edward III, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Vatsyayana, Giacomo Casanova, Richard Wagner, Edith Piaf, and Elizabeth Taylor.
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”. Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.
Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.
Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine’s Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap”.
According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)
Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

Romantic Getaway for 2
Whidbey Island, Washington
On the Waterfront Though it’s only a 20-minute ferry ride from from Seattle suburb Mukilteo, Whidbey Island feels like the Pacific Northwest’s last frontier—a lost-in-time place of towering redwoods and sparkling coves overlooking Puget Sound. Take refuge at the 28-room Inn at Langley(doubles from $195), in Langley, a pint-size town on the island. Each suite has a Jacuzzi with views of the evergreen-lined Saratoga Passage waterway (and the gray whales that swim through in spring). In the historic center, Lowry-James Rare Prints & Books sells vintage maps and Audubon lithographs; the Clyde Theatre, a 1937 movie house, screens the classics and contemporary films. Drive 30 miles north to Ebey’s Landing to walk the coastal bluffs, or make your way to Coupeville, known for its Penn Cove mussels, which no-frills Toby’s Tavern (lunch for two $22) serves right.

If you don’t make an extra effort, your relationship with your loved one will slowly yet surely start to drift. The simple things that remember them that you love them and that you are in their thoughts. I found an article that really captures little ways to show them how much you care. So, to not rip them off anymore…
Keeping Romance Alive
By Sandra Rouse
Keeping romance alive in your relationship means you remember the important days such as your anniversary or Valentine Day. It also means that you create special occasions for your partner. A special occasion can be as simple as giving your partner a greeting card or writing a love letter.
Here are some creative suggestions to keep romance alive.
Creativity goes a long way in keeping romance alive. You can make your own greeting cards. If you want to give your partner a poem expressing your love, check out a copy of Shakespeare’s sonnets from the library. Write one on a beautiful piece of paper, place it in an envelope and give it to “The One I Love.”
Be creative by placing notes or gifts in unusual places such as concert tickets under the pillow or hiding a gift in a bouquet of flowers or in the refrigerator.
Create your own special occasion. Write a proclamation on parchment paper stating that this is “Our Week.” Each day of the week, starting on Monday, do something special for your partner. On Saturday, prepare a picnic lunch or have one specially made up for you at a local deli or restaurant. Create an invitation to meet you at your favorite park and place it where it is sure to be noticed. When your partner arrives, have the picnic spread out. Bring along a portable CD player with your favorite songs. On Sunday, spend the morning in bed, go out to brunch in the afternoon, and walk off your meal at your favorite museum. Return home to a quiet evening of music, dancing, and a candlelight supper.
Create your own gift-of-the-month club. Look for sales at your favorite department stores. Purchase a gift for each month of the year for your partner. Place the gift in a different place each month or make special presentations at a different time and on a different day of each month. Remember the special gift days such as your anniversary with a special gift and a special presentation.
Keeping romance alive is about the spontaneous, little things you do. A gaze in the eyes, or a touch of the hand as you pass, or a hug, or just cuddling will show your partner you care.
